Codachrome - a time of road dreams DVDCodachrome - a time of road dreams is now in production. AVAILABLE SUMMER 2009
The film's form is as a DVD feature, and it will have a running time of between 100 and 120 minutes, covering the full 14 years and 500,000 miles I spent on the road. For those of you who are familiar with the earlier television series Road Dreams it will have some parallels, though there will also be a range of new imagery and music. An awareness of Jack Kerouac's book On the Road was always part of the perspective. From this book I caught a severe case of white line fever, which didn't abate for fourteen years (and even then has never really been cured). For much of that time I was stressed and anxious and flat broke - normal conditions for a life on the road - but my interest in this fascinating country never waned. So much of that world has been swept away, of course - my first trips out of New York were over 40 years ago - which only makes the point for keeping a film diary. I shot over 75 hours of Super 8 film, with the Road Dreams diary using the best 22 hrs of that footage, and so these years on the road can be revisited in all their glorious, saturated colour. Codachrome - a time of road dreams will take you back to that 'other country' of the past, to enjoy the freedom and adventures I experienced and remember most fondly.
